CAR SPOILERS

It is true, looks are important and many cars are sold because of their exterior looks rather than because of technical elements or security features. Nevertheless, because a car is designed to be sold and driven both by young people (who seek the more thrilling aspect of a car) and by family persons (who rather seek a more serious looking car), its design is rather conservative. That is why many car owners choose to modify their car’s looks to make it look more aggressive. This is the case of young car owners especially.

Moreover, what better way to change a car’s aspect than to add (or replace) a spoiler.
A spoiler is an element that is put on a car to improve the car’s stability and handling at high speeds. What this element does is to create more wind pressure to press the rear of the car and stick it firmer to the road. That is why spoilers were first installed on high performance sport cars. Nevertheless, nowadays more and more car owners, not necessary sport models, choose to install a spoiler to give the car a sportier looks.

A car is aerodynamically shaped so it would consume less fuel while it travels. Manufacturers also try to make cars lighter and lighter, as this is another important element in increasing the car’s mileage. However, because of these two aspects, a normal car will behave differently at very high speeds compared to normal cruising speeds. Due to the air flowing very fast over the back of the car, a difference in air pressure is created and the car’s tail will tend to jump and not to make perfect road contact. A spoiler’s duty is to interrupt this airflow and modify it to push the car’s end to the ground. This will make the care behave better while cornering at high speeds, as well increase its stability when traveling very fast on bumpy roads. The result is an increased amount of force pushing between the tires to the road surface that provides greater traction.

There are many types of spoilers from which to choose from. The most common used one is the wing spoiler, which is mounted at the rear of the car. The rear wing spoiler creates better down force over the rear of the car, increasing its stability and control.

There also are spoilers that are mounted at the front of the car, the so-called air dams (the air dumps are situated at the underside of the front bumper), tailgate spoilers or truck cap spoilers.
